4 Tips to Avoid Identity Theft

The Federal Trade Commission reported that
identity theft went up 12 percent in 2009.

ID thieves still prefer the classics, cell phone
and credit card fraud, but medical ID theft is
coming up fast and being used to acquire free
treatment or prescription drugs.

The FTC supports these four simple ways to
keep your identity safe and sound:

Verify a source before sharing information.

•Don't give out information on the phone or through mail unless you know the person with whom you're dealing.

•Beware of "free" health services or products from providers who require you to give them your health plan IDnumber.

•Read every "Explanation of Benefits" statement you get from your health insurer. Followup on any item youdon't recognize.
